Description

This is one of my first astro images taken with a Olympus OM-1 film camera in 1997. The image of comet Hale-Bopp was taken using a homemade mechanical tracker made by my best friend  @meteoritehunterjim.  When the photo was developed I noticed an open cluster next to it. I looked at a star chart and wondered if it was M34. All these years passed with the photo hanging on my wall and every once in a while I would wonder again if the cluster was M34.

Well I walked by it today and it dawned on me that I could scan the image and upload to astrometry.net and finally find out.

So after 25 years of wondering I finally found out that the open cluster next to comet Hale-Bopp is indeed M34. I did not notice until today that Hale-Bopp is inbetween M34 and NGC 891 (although barely visible).
